Research Physiologist
Dr. Allen is a Research Physiologist and former Center Director at the USDA’s Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Davis, California, and a member of the ARS Science Hall of Fame. Her work has transformed the understanding of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12, showing that deficiency is widespread not only among vegetarians but also among populations with low intake of animal-source foods. Her research has highlighted the broader impact of poor dietary quality on micronutrient status and informed global nutrition policy. Allen played a key role in developing micronutrient supplements for pregnant women and infants adopted by UNICEF worldwide, improving maternal and child health outcomes. She has also contributed to international food fortification guidelines with the WHO and FAO, and her recent work has advanced understanding of how maternal diet influences human milk composition, producing the first systematic establishment of micronutrient reference values in human milk under her leadership.
